Escape from the Blitz

Chapter 2 - Josie

The first few weeks at the new house were difficult for Katie, she kept thinking about her parents and her friends who were all on the other side of town, her new guardians were great to her but they just weren't the same. Polly knew when Katie was thinking for she stared at the same spot all day until her eyes started to water. Polly thought Katie was a great child, fun and energetic but she just didn't have friends here to play with and chat to, so to cheer Katie up Polly sat down with her one night and gave her a piece of paper, a pen and an envelope and told her to write to her parents, Katie was pleased and a huge smile erupted on her face, "Thank you," she choked, she was almost crying with happiness, the thought of her parents made her feel happy and wonderful, "You're most welcome to, anytime you want to, just ask," Polly said, "just as long as you start being happy and stop being miserable," she smiled and walked upstairs to her bedroom. Katie started to write....

Dear Mum and Dad,
I am staying with Polly and Richard Knotter, they're very kind and generous people, I hope you receive this letter and you're alright. Polly cheered me up today by telling me I could write to you any time, I still miss you though and I do hope I can come home soon.
All my love, Katie

SPACING WORDS

She placed it into the envelope and gave it to Polly. Polly was surprised to see her skipping up to her and giving her a letter, "I shall give it to the postman first thing tomorrow," Polly declared, what shocked her next was Katie saying, "Can I go and explore the woods, please," her answer was, "Yes, do make sure you're careful though."

Katie ran into the woods and spun around with her arm outstretched and her finger pointing, she stopped, deciding to go eastwards. The trees were all cluttered together even though light still shone through the leaves, which left the wood calm and wonderful, a beautiful smell filled the area, it was a fresh smell of newly mowed grass. She carried on walking eastwards until she heard a stunning voice fill up the wood with happiness and wonder. She followed the voice and saw a pretty lady with long jet-black hair and pink cheeks, the woman looked rather startled. "Oh, how strange, it isn't very often that I see folk around here nowadays, who may you be?" the woman asked this gently and calmly.

"My name's Katie, I am an evacuee from London," and then she paused, "Why?" "Oh I'm just curious, I'm Josie, I live in the cottage over there", Katie looked a head and saw a small cottage, "Come for a pot of tea if you like," Katie couldn't resist the temptation so she answered yes to the question.
