Alexander Dumas
Alexander Dumas , who was a famous author was born in 1802. He was the son of a general in Napoleon's army. In adult life he had very simple jobs. He tried to make money in journalism but he made very little success. He wrote successful action theatre play stories. He was a novelist but a more successful playwright.
Dumas's plays were judged from a modern point of view. He was one of the founders of the problem play.
He had a son who was born in 1824 and died in 1895. At an early age he was interested in drama. When he was an adult he composed his own opera-La Traviata which was first performed in 1853. Alexander (father) was admitted into the French academy. He wrote books, biographies, pet books and even a cook book. He died in 1870.

The Story of
Winston Churchill
In 1874, Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was born. He was the son of Lord Randolph Churchill (1849-1895). Sir Winston was educated at Harrow and Sandhurst and later on he served with the army in India and Africa.
In 1900 he became a member of parliament, Sir Winston held several posts of government between the first and second world war. In 1945 he was defeated in the General Election.
Churchill was a soldier, historian, writer and a painter as well as a politician. He served as prime minister again in 1951-1956, in the middle of being prime minister he was knighted in 1953.
Churchill died aged 90 in 1965, he died a happy death and he would had nothing to offer but 'blood, toil, tears and sweat'.
