National Tree Week Some children from Year 6 Wallerscote School - Katy Wilson, David Burchell, Carole Hignett, Dean Elms, Nicola Brown and Ben King took part in the NATIONAL TREE WEEK. We meet up with John Gittins, and Katy Wilson interviewed him and got some information, while the others introduced themselves to Bob and Katie, (some workers for the Cheshire landscape trust). We were going to plant some trees to mark the launch of the National tree week and the Theme is Favourite trees. They picked our school because it is one of the leading schools throughout the country to promote local Agenda 21. Katie went to university to get her degree in Ecology (animals and plants) and after that she went to join the Landscape Trust. Bob Price is a tree expert and a trustee of the Cheshire Landscape Trust. We planted the following trees - Hawthorn, Black Thorn, Hazel and Guelder Rose. The plants where grown at a Nursery and then planted at our school. Bob showed us an easy way of planting them. You just pull up the ground a bit, and then you place the plant in the gap. Katie has been with the Cheshire Landscape Trust for a long, long time. Bob said that we are aiming to plant around 50 trees around the school. We got a tip from Bob and Katie you canÕt plant in long grass so you need to flatten the grass. Bob started working in fresh air with wild animals before he became an expert on trees and a member of the trust. He started working in North Wales in 1956 and has planted over 1000 trees in that time. While we were digging we found some beetleÕs eggs. We got some more tips from Bob and Katie. You need a good place to plant trees and not under other trees as it wonÕt get much rain. We moved on and planted Guelder Rose as these are very useful because they help feed the birds in the winter with their berries. Bob and Katie said they were going to plant the Black Thorn and the Hawthorn as they were prickly, but we all decided we wanted to carry on planting the trees so we did. As the theme is favourite trees we asked Katie and Bob what their favourite trees are, Katie said her favourite tree was a Beech tree Bob said he liked Oak trees best. We planted 52 trees, 15 Guelder Rose, 15 Hazel, 1 Rowan and a Field Maple, 10 Hawthorn and 10 Black Thorn. You needed gloves to handle the Black Thorn and the Hawthorn plants because they were so prickly. It took us 1hour and 30 minutes. It was great fun
